Why do my colour cartridges run out on my Brother printer when I don't do any colour printing? - brother printer rebates

I have a Brother MFC-3340CN printer does not print color ink, and still occasionally races on my color cartridge and I have to replace them before printing, even if the black cartridge is full. Can someone tell me why and how to avoid?
